Mood Board
This is a mood board I created of some well known horror characters from horror films as I'm creating a horror trailer, I think this is some good research. A main horror character to a horror film is a common convention in every main horror or thriller film. Its helped me get some ideas for my own trailer and narrative.

Target audience research analysis
To get a clear idea of who my target audience should be and what would work best, I created a survey.
As you can see below, the majority were female. They went on to choose horror as their preferred genre, because of this I've decided to create a film trailer for a horror film. The majority of the people who answered my survey were ages between 17-20. This shows that horror would be a good choice as this age group has the highest rate of people who watch horror films the most. I also asked them what attracts them to a film? The most popular answer was 'the storyline', this is good as if they said that the actor/actress was what attracted them to watch a film it would be difficult for me to produce a good product. In conclusion my target audience are females, aged 17-20.

Eden Lake film trailer analysis
The trailer starts showing the couples journey into the woods,
slow fading transitions making it relaxed, it shows them laughing and joking
which gives it a light and happy feel.
It then goes
on to show text saying “out of the city” “off the map” and shows a clip of the
males sat nav, which is telling him to turn around. The transitions become
faster and sharper which starts to give the viewer more of a panicked feeling.
There is a clip of the camera scanning the woods, tracking it from bird’s eye
view.
The feel of
the trailer becomes more and more stressed when the screen flashes red and have
an image of a dog barking loud, which makes the viewer and the women on screen
jump.
It then has a
long shot from a distance of a gang of stereotypical teenagers walking towards
the couple who are at the time sunbathing. This interrupts the relaxed feel of
the trailer and introduces the atmosphere of how the film and trailer will
follow. The shots and transitions become shorter and faster. Day turns to night
in the trailer, making it scarier for the viewer.
It shows the
main teenager driving the couples car towards the couple, which shows and
introduces him as the typical bad guy, and the ‘evil’ one in the film (the
leader of the group of teenagers) The screen flashes red with the teenagers
face faded in the background, flipping and changing to close ups of the couple
who are crying, with dirt and blood on their face, this shows the viewer that
something has happened to the couple which has resulted in them being injured.
There is a loud sound clip of the dog barking, and suspense music in the background,
which makes the viewer tenser.
It goes on to show a
mid shot of the women running through the woods trying to get away from the
group of teens. It also shows a close up shot tracking the women’s face.
It constantly shows the women fighting for her survival covered in dirt, blood and grime. It shows that she is trying to help her partner. It finishes showing the women hiding in a toilet, you can hear her breathing heavily with fear, there’s a close up cut out shot of her hand holding some sort of blade. Then there’s a loud bang, you see the door open and it ends.
This film is aimed at 18+ as the films age is 18 and over anyway which excludes the younger age groups. The thriller and horror genre is very popular in this age group and therefore fits well with its target audience.

Film trailer history.
FILM TRAILOR HISTORY
What is a film trailer?
A film trailer is the vital part when it comes to marketing films. They are usually shown at the beginning of a film when you watch them in the cinema or on a dvd. They advertise upcoming films to attract attention from their chosen target audiences. As they are usually quite short snippets, they therefore go to the extreme of their film genre, for example, if the film is a comedy then the editing would be fast paced along with the music to match which then shows the tone and mood of the film. But if it was a horror then the editing would be slow and the shots are dark. Film trailers have become very popular searches online, especially on sites such as youtube, film companies are now taking advantage of this by creating more than one trailer in attempt to go viral.

The beginning of film trailers-
The first trailer was shown in 1912 at Rye Beach, New York. One of the concessions hung up a white sheet and showed the serial The Adventures of Kathlyn. At the end of the reel Kathlyn was thrown in the lion's den. After this 'trailed' a piece of film asking Does she escape the lion's pit? See next week's thrilling chapter!"
Even before the studios got into the act, exhibitors were innovating ways to let audiences sample upcoming films. As the folklore has it, some would simply run the first reel of a new movie after the main feature, while others would choose a few of the most interesting-looking scenes and put them together.

In 1916, Paramount became the first studio to officially release trailers, though they only bothered to spend the extra effort with their highest-profile films.
By August 1919, the studio had set up its own trailer division and was actively assembling previews for all of their upcoming films
Up until the 1950’s film trailers were made by national screen service, which was contracted by the film companies to create the trailers, which would be used for upcoming films, this company only lasted until the 80’s.
As films stared to change their ways in the 60’s, so did the trailers to go along side. The new ‘breed’ of films spawned new styles and ways.
Andrew J. Kuehn.
Andrew J. Kuehn was a very influential trailer producer. He changed the way that trailers were made in his 1964 trailer for ‘Nights of the iguana’, which is when he created the company Kaleidoscope Films. The company worked for three decades creating some of the biggest trailers for the biggest films and film makers of the time, including many Spielberg films, for example, Kuehn produced the original trailer for ‘Et’.
Kuehn was presented with the Cannes lifetime achievement award and is credited with other 1000 trailers.
Kuehn is quoted saying:
“A trailer has but one goral: to draw audiences out of their houses into a theater. To do that you have to set up a sense of urgency. In the process of arriving at that forced pace, we advanced the style of editing. We really pushed the envelope in terms of what audiences would accept.’

The format of trailers - Trailers tend to follow the same pattern as film does. They have a beginning a sequence, followed by a problem and then a solution. This shows the audience what the film is about, however it has been debated that this format reveals too much of the story. Some people suggest that all the best and good bits of the film are put into the trailer.
Some trailers also include sequences that are not actually in the film. This is most famously seen in the six-minute trailer for Hitchcock’s ‘Psycho’ in which the whole trailer is shot post production and even included a different actress for the main role. However some things are in the trailers that have been cut out from the original film. Although this doesn’t seem that bad, it still miss leads the audience.

Media brief.
22/06/11
Brief-
A promotion package for a new film, together with two of the following three options:
-A website homepage for the film;
-A website homepage for the film;
-A film magazine front cover, featuring the film;
-A poster for the film
I chose this brief in particular because I wanted to experiment and improve my skills with filming, also for my AS media course I created a magazine cover, contents and double page spread which means I have some experience with creating this type of product.
My chosen genre for my film is crime.
As a starting point to my production I am going to analyze 9 movie trailers from the same genre.
